Away from his beloved stage, Dumas, musician and performer par excellence, welcomed us to his terrasse and went over a few things he’s been up to during self-quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the Terrasse...with Dumas
With his son at home, Dumas has reverted to his beginning years and works early in the morning and late at night. The pandemic has thrown light on the limitations of digital music consumption—gone is the visceral, irreplaceable relationship an artist forges with the crowd over the course of a performance. The renewal of that relationship holds exciting promise.
His consumption habits veer strongly to buying local. An interesting idea has been encouraging local record shops to get in on home delivery, dropping off bundles or rare surprises, to the delight of the recipients.
How does Dumas shake off the quarantine blues? Running has been an outlet, along with meditation, living in the moment, and savouring more family time. And of course listening to more music—vinyl, if you please.
Dumas is wearing the Richmond shirt and the Leith chinos.
